How ACSA’s new hand luggage restrictions may affect your insurance

The Airports Company South Africa's (ACSA) issued new hand luggage restrictions earlier this year which may affect your insurance cover. ACSA's new restrictions, which affect all airports across South Africa, affect all airlines and travellers across the country.

According to ACSA, the new regulations restrict economy class carry-on luggage to a single piece with a maximum weight of 7kg and within specified dimensions (36cm x 23cm x 56cm) along with either a handbag or a slim-line laptop bag. All hand luggage exceeding this would have to be checked in and multiple hand luggage bags are no longer allowed.

In line with these new hand luggage restrictions, you should check your insurance cover in the event of loss or damage to your belongings. Santam provides basic cover for clothing and personal effects up to the amount shown in the policy schedule. Compensation is limited to the amount or 20 % of the insured amount (whichever is the greater), shown in the Schedule for any one article, pair or set. If an article that is lost or damaged was part of a pair or a set, we will not compensate you for more than the article's value proportionate to the total value of the pair or set.
